DISTINGTON CLUB FOR YOUNG PEOPLE.
CHILD PROTECTION POLICY.
This policy is written for the Distington Club for Young People who are working with young people of 8 years and older, and under 17. It does not apply to under 8's.
The Distington Club for Young People’s responsibilities:
- To provide short training courses.
- To provide a library of up to date books available at the Club.
- To keep up to date with all legislation on Child Protection.
The Distington Club for Young People management committee's responsibilities:
- To understand, agree and adopt a Child Protection Policy and to implement it.
- To nominate a person within the group for Child Protection issues.
- To establish a process of reporting any incidents or fears.
- To display a notice that the group has a Child protection policy.
- To organise the vetting of adult workers.
- To provide further information.
The responsibility of all Distington Club for Young People workers:
- To attend a short training course of 1 hour on Child Protection and to understand the policy and guidelines.
- To familiarise themselves with the guidelines.
- To use the colleague who is the appointed Child Protection Office who will decide whether to take the matter further or not.
- To understand and comply with the guidelines for good practice in working with young people.
- To agree to vetting procedure.
The responsibilities of the appointed Child Protection Officer:
- To attend a fuller, recognised Child protection training course.
- To establish access to a social worker or medical practitioner who pursue any incidents or fears.
- To familiarise themselves with further information, where and when available.
- To make the groups guidelines and policy known within the group.
- To keep a record book of any incidents and to keep the information private and confidential.
The Distington Club for Young People guidelines for good working practice
Two important issues have to be considered:
- Never think that you are the Social Services or the Police. Try to avoid becoming legally involved. Leave that work to the experts.
- The Distington Club for Young People often creates situations where young people feel confident to confide their problems to the adults.
If the Child Protection Policy and the following guidelines are followed all parties should feel protected and informed.
These guidelines should cover 3 possible situations:
- How to respond if a child discloses abuse.
- How to create a safe situation to carry out dreamscheme activities.
- How to protect adult workers form fictitious accusations.
How to respond if a child discloses abuse
Abuse can be physical injury, physical neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse.
- Be a good listener
- Do not panic, act calmly.
- Try to tell the child early in the conversation that you will treat the information as confidential, but that it may also be necessary to tell your colleague if it is serious.
- Reassure the child that it is OK for them to have told you and that they have done nothing wrong.
- Go directly to the appointed colleague and make a written record the information. Record who was present and what was said.
How to create a safe situation to carry out Club activities
- Plan activities which involve more than one other person present, at least within sight or hearing of others.
- Respect a young person's right to privacy.
- Always provide separate steeping accommodation for mates and females.
- Inform young people of this policy and the working guidelines.
- Become aware how other people might interpret your actions and cautious.
- Adhere to the Child Protection policy.
- Make your good practice visible
How to protect adults from false accusations
- Adhere to the policy and guidelines.
- Help others to Record accusations accurately
- Inform the accuser of exactly what will happen next
Appoint your CP officer and make their role a pleasant one, encourage and support them in their work.
In a court of law a judge may decide on a case of negligence towards children by deciding whether or not the person accused had acted in a that a "REASONABLE PARENT" would act.
